Mencius was the philosopher whose influence upon ancient Chinese thought was second only to that of Confucius, whose teachings Mencius defended and expanded. The Mencius, in which he recounts his dialogues with kings, dukes, and military men, as well as other philosophers, is one of the four books that make up the essential Confucian corpus. It takes up Confucius's theories of jen, or goodness, and yi, righteousness, explaining that the individual can achieve harmony with mankind and the universe by perfecting his innate moral nature and acting with benevolence and justice. Mencius's remarkably modern views on the duties of subjects and their rulers and on the evils of war created a Confucian orthodoxy that has remained intact since the third century BCE.

Good translation. When I was 7 years old, my father tried to teach my sister and I The Four Books, and I remember the first passage of Mencius. Too bad at the time I had no interest, and would rather play ball.

The Works of Mencius Mencius James Legge 9781453781326 Books Reviews

I found the other reviews on this page rather unfair so I am leaving one myself. This is by far the best edition of Mencius for students of the Chinese classics. This is a rather good reprinting of the 19th century Legge edition which contains both the Chinese and the English with extensive textual notes. Legge was an excellent translator with poetic talents, and in this particular instance I think his translation is superior to some of the 20th and 21st century attempts. Mencius is a very easy read in Classical Chinese, so almost anyone everyone who takes Mencius seriously will prefer this edition to modern competing translations that only have the English. This Dover edition is a step above newer reprintings that were stolen from Google Books and it will make a good addition to your library.
In this book the original chinese text and extensive footnotes take up about two thirds of each page, the remainder has to suffice for the english translation. This does not make for an easy read so unless you are a dedicated scholar I would look elsewhere for Mencius's views. That is what i will be doing, passing this version on to the people at Goodwill charities, I hope they can make better use of it. An academic might well give this a 5 star rating, and perhaps i should have read the description more carefully, but as a lay reader I found this book far too specialized.
The only translation worthwhile, in my admittedly humble opinion. It's a bit cumbersome in format, but check it against several other translations and you'll be amazed at how far afield the more modern ones get... This translator came recommended by professors in the field and the translator is a classic for good reason.
