First off, a confession. Blackthorne Forest isn’t exactly my kind of book. Not only is it YA, it was written from the perspective of a teenage girl. Since I’m not a teenage girl, and have almost no patience for kids who aren’t my own, I expected to feel alienated both as an adult reader and as a man. But fortunately, that didn’t happen. Rather, I got sucked into the story. I’ll admit there were moments when I was reminded why I don’t make a habit of venturing outside my preferred genres, yet as the story moved along, I was constantly thinking: “My kids are gonna love this when they get a little older.” As a parent, I appreciate the author’s commitment to writing something G-rated that I’ll be able to comfortably share with my kids. Nothing more frustrating than a YA novel loaded with foul language and inappropriate innuendo, so Blackthorne Forest was particularly nice in that regard. I read this enchanting story several months ago and have fond memories of being curled up in bed hungry for the next turn of events. The author created strongly defined and memorable characters. The true test of a book for me is twofold 1) I relish the characters and 2) As I close the book, I'm satisfied yet I want to read more adventures about these people. Claire Fogel satisfied both criteria. Recommended for a light, intriguing read.
I was very pleasantly surprised by this YA novel, it truly is a standout among other YA books that push the boundaries between what is suitable for the age group and are more suitable for adult or NA audiences. I really enjoyed the story, it was well written and I'll be buying the next book when it's available to find out what happens!
I'm not often a YA reader, but this was great fun full of characters you can care about and a story that left me eager to read more, which thankfully I'll be able to do. At the same time, there are life lessons here, not the least is the great worth that is the bond between family and friends. Too, even wondrous gifts bestowed bring a price, and though young Cara struggles, she keeps fighting. The forest is a mysterious place that draws Cara into its midst for reasons she understands and many that she doesn't.
As I flipped through the pages of "Blackthorne Forest", I wasn't just reading a story....I was a part of it. Claire does an excellent job detailing the characters and the scenery as well as the emotions that run through the storyline. It was extremely difficult to put the book down once I begin reading. I felt as if I were there with "Cara" through the laughter and the tears, spending time with her family, friends, and the forest, as well as seeing her through all of the "firsts" that were happening in her life. I am finding it very difficult waiting for the second book to be finished. I have enjoyed this story's charm and it's characters to such an extent that I find myself wishing that it were a series on prime time. I guarantee if it were, I wouldn't miss one night!
Although this book is intended for a younger audience, as a senior citizen I found it very enjoyable. The characters and their actions are quite realistic, especially the teenagers. Also, the fantasy is by no means overdone. Rather, it is expertly woven into the everyday lives of the people in the small town of Blackthorne. I heartily recommend this book to readers of all ages. What is especially interesting is that this book is the very first ever written by this author. Since "Blackthorne Forest" and due to its popularity, Ms. Fogel has written two more books which continue the adventures of the characters in this first effort. And, she is currently working on the fourth and final book in the series.
The story starts with Cara being an average shy teenager growing up with a single parent. Her frustration lies in her inability to obtain information from her mother about the father she never knew. Blackthorne forest has always been her playground since childhood but a sudden turn of events within the forest has put Cara on a path into a world she as only read about in storybooks. Her adventure leads her embarking down dark paths, beholding enchanting people, her first crush and finding the meaning of true friendships. It is definitely a coming of age season in Cara's life. The author has done an excellent job in weaving in and out of reality and fantasy. I found it to be an excellent read.
What a dream read for teen girls! Author Claire Fogel creates a world where fantasy and realism coexist. Cara is a young lady who comes to an awakening about who her father is and the secrets that lie within the world he lives in. Blackthorne forest is described so vividly I felt I was right there and wanted to be. Cara also discovers a secret that was hidden about herself only to be revealed on the sixteenth birthday. I loved the circle of friends here and each had their own lovable personality. This is a clean read that flows seamlessly from one chapter till the next. I can’t wait to delve into book 2!
